A bomb reaction unit and other authorities rushed to the Imam Hussain Mosque in Verulam where suspected explosives were found.
It’s understood that worshipers had concluded their evening prayers when they found a white capsule with two wires connected to a cellphone after moving the pulpit on Sunday night.
This comes just after police minister Bheki Cele visited the mosque after the deadly attack last Thursday in which one person was killed and two others wounded.
Reaction Units Prem Balram says it’s unclear at this stage whether the device was a bomb.
“According to the worshippers, the device was found under the Moulana’s chair which is close to the prayer area, after they had switched on the lights in the mosque. One of the worshippers then picked up the device and called Reaction Unit South Africa.”
