A 24-year-old man suspected in the rape and killing of a seven-year-old Pakistani girl has been arrested in a breakthrough in a case that has stirred outrage across the country.
Zainab Ansari, who went missing from her aunt’s house on January 4, was raped and murdered, and her body was found on January 9 in a garbage dump.
Government spokesman, Malik Ahmed Khan says that the suspect, identified as Mohammed Imran, was arrested near the city of Kasur where Zainab was killed earlier this month.
“He (Imran) was among the 600 people whose DNA tests had been conducted.”
Quoting police sources, Geo News reports the suspect was familiar with girl’s family and would also frequent the minor girl’s house and that Imran had also confessed to his crime.
Zainab’s father Mohammed Amin wants the culprit to be publicly hanged.
According to Geo News, Imran’s DNA also matches samples taken from seven other minor girls who were abused and murdered earlier in the area.
Zainab’s killing provoked widespread public anger and violent protests, resulting in the killing of two demonstrators.
