South Africa’s Zameer Dada Is The 1st Ever African Spelling Bee Champion

July 17, 2016

Mohamed Ameen Dabhelia – 17-07-2016

A Fourteen year old South African teenager has been crowned the 1st ever African spelling bee Champion at the inaugural event in Muldersdrift situated in the Gauteng Province.

Zameer Dada beat 26 other top spellers from across nine African countries including Zimbabwe, Malawi, Nigeria and Lesotho to be crowned Africa’s champion orthographer (expert in spelling).

Dada says that as the words got trickier, he could see how the numbers were dwindling.

“When I checked, it was down to the top three contenders; South Africa, Kenya and Ethiopia and we were all looking to make history.”

He says preparation was key.

“For my preparation I read the books Animal Farm, Folktales from Africa and then I went through the Mzansi Spelling Bee booklet from last year.”

Organisers say they are working towards greater participation and the inaugural competition is one way to celebrate the African child.
