Concerns have been raised about a bad trend or habit that has developed among some Muslims in which they are flouting the Sunnah of Nabi (SAW) by refusing to fill-in the gaps in a saff during salaah.
This “habit” has become noticeable at various masaajid across South Africa, especially during Jumu’ah and Taraweeh salaah during the blessed month of Ramadan.
According to witnesses who have spoken to Radio Islam, people refuse to fill-in the gaps even after the İmam instructs the congregation that the saff’s should be completed.
From blank stares to blatantly ignoring requests to complete the saff, some Muslims have become non-chalant to adhering to one of the most important tenets of salaah, thereby openly rejecting the Sunnah advocated by Nabi (SAW).
Prominent scholar and Radio Islam presenter, Mufti Yusuf Moosagie says people may have various reasons for not filling-in the gaps, including wanting to leave early after salaah or preferring a certain area where the temperatures are ideal.
However Mufti Moosagie says reluctance in completing the saff is not in accordance with the teachings of Nabi (SAW).
“Nabi (SAW) had advised us that the completion of the sufoof, that means filling-in of all the gaps, standing shoulder to shoulder is part of the completion of our salaah, meaning that if we perform salaah in such a way that there’s gaps within our sufoof in the rows, than that would result in our salaah being deficient. “
Mufti Moosagie says Nabi (SAW) had warned people about not filling-in the saff’s.
“Nabi (SAW) had warned that if we do not fill the sufoof correctly, entirely, then what would happen is, our hearts would become disunited. This is something that would lead to major problems within our own ranks and we do not want to go down that route. That’s why this is an easy way to unite ourselves and that is by standing shoulder to shoulder, filling in all the gaps.”
Mufti Moosagie has advised Imams to frequently remind people on the importance of Nabi (SAW)’s Sunnah of filling in the gaps in the saff’s, especially during Ramadan and Jumu’ah as during these times there are more people that go to masaajid.
