I wondered whether it was the set of a movie or maybe an earthquake the new of which never reached us back home. Somalia's walls could be mistaken for a strainer due to the amount of bullet holes it has. Not 1 or 2 but 90% of the buildings stand in this condition. Some of the buildings have floors that has totally collapsed due to the civil war. From the national theater to the finest hotels that once stood with pride on Somalia's soil, all destroyed by an episode of violence between its people. On a positive note though, one of the most perfect, complete and unharmed building in Somalia was the Masjid. At times one would think that a building has a ramp going to the 2nd floor, only to realise that the wall from the 2nd floor collapsed, making it look like a ramp. After seeing scars of war on the buildings, i wondered what it must have been like to live here while the war was on. I wondered how the people walking today managed to survive. Somalia's beach however, is one of the most beautiful you will ever see. Crystal clear blue water coupled with white sand with a touch of brown. As i stood on the beach with my feet buried in its beautiful water, i imagined how beautiful Somalia must have been before the war, before the famine. The buildings along the beach show signs of once being palace like mansions but today they stand vacant and abused. 20 years ago the world touched Somalia's shores to cast a glance at its beauty….today the world touches its shores to aid its people. Makes me think…just last year the world flocked to South Africa for the football spectacle…what if we are once again visited by the world 20 years later?
May Allah save us Ameen
