A former Somali Muslim refugee has broken barrier by becoming the Mayor of English city Sheffield.
Magid Magid was born in Somalia and moved to the British city 23 years ago when his family fled the war-struck African country.
He and his family initially stayed in a refugee camp in Ethiopia for six months, before they moved to the United Kingdom.
Now 28, Magid was just five at the time and has since gone on to study marine biology at the University of Hull, where he first entered politics.
Magid is the youngest man to hold the mayoral post in the Yorkshire city, while he is also the first Green Party councilor to be elected into office.
“Me and my family moved to Sheffield from Somalia when I was five years old to look for a better life and it was this great city I call home that welcomed me and many others like me. But I am not arrogant enough to think that I made it here all by myself.”
