The Social Development Department says the drug rehabilitation centre in Magaliesburg where a 40-year-old man died after being allegedly assaulted has not been fully registered with the department.
Muhammad Sheikh from Lenasia was admitted to the Crescent of Hope facility last month where he was allegedly assaulted by staff and patients.
Sheikh died from his injuries on Sunday at the Ahmed Kathrada Private Hospital after spending two weeks in a coma.
The Social Development Department’s Mbangwa Xaba says they are investigating the alleged assault.
“We’ve sent a team a team of social workers to verify facts around the incident. We know that the centre in question for starters wasn’t full registered with us. We know they had applied, there was one or two documentation that was still outstanding.”
Police have confirmed they are investigating a case of murder.
