There has been an ongoing debate about whether little children should be allowed to accompany their fathers to masaajid during the blessed month of Ramadan.

Concerns have been raised that children tend to engage in folly, are mischievous and disturb the hufaaz that are rendering the taraweeh salaah.

Last year, during the month of Ramadan, a fight at Masjid Hilaal in Overport broke out after apparent misbehaving children who were reprimanded by an elder reported the scolding to their parents.

The situation escalated after the parents confronted the elder resulting in blows being exchanged outside the masjid.

At the same time a video went viral on social media showing a group of youth allegedly from Roshnee beating up another youngster also during Ramadan last year.

It’s unclear what the fight was about, but the clip had drawn widespread condemnation from various circles about the behaviour of Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan.

Secretary General of the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa Ml Ebrahim Bham says the issue about children going to masaajid should be looked at in perspective.

“No one is suggesting that children should come to the masjid in a way they cause disturbance to the people who are performing salaah. Yet at the same time, children are the future of the Ummah and we should be able to create a loving atmosphere in the masjid to be able to accommodate them so that they do not feel alienated from the masjid and deen.”

Ml Bham says while there is furore about children going to masaajid, there is an equal if not greater concern about the youth’s participation in the masaajid.

“If there is no noise and there is no presence of the youth outside the masjid, this should be of great concern to us. We should be making all efforts to be able to bring the youth to our masjid and creating the right atmosphere, the right environment and bringing them and enticing them for which we will be rewarded and it is absolutely essential for the future of the Muslim Ummah.”

Ml Bham says a conducive environment must be created for children and the youth so that they can love Allah, love the masjid and love the deen of Islam.
