Shoe retailer Shoe City says it has recalled and removed all shoes from its stores bearing the name ‘Muhammad’ after outrage that it’s disrespectful to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
A customer claims he visited one of the Shoe City stores last week where he found a show with the name “Muhammad” which retails for R 359.95.
In a post circulating widely on social media, Amod Mohamed says the naming of the shoe ‘Muhammad’ by Shoe City borders on blasphemy.
“It is not my intention to go into the greatness of this personality, as I am sure you have heard his name previously and would be aware that he is a person who is revered by Muslims and consider him to be a Prophet of God and the greatest of Mankind.”
In a Facebook post Shoe City has apologized to customers saying it is taking care of every precaution to rectify the error.
“We would also like to take this opportunity to apologise profusely for the oversight on our part. We respect all customers and religions.”
Shoe City says it will post or release an official response after consulting with the management team.
