Shoe City Apologises to Muslims for ‘Muhammad’ Shoe

August 01, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 01-08-2017

Shoe retailer Shoe City has apologized to Muslims after an outcry that a shoe labeled as Muhammad is disrespectful to the last prophet in Islam who bears the same name.

A post by a customer circulating on social media platforms claims he visited one of the Shoe City stores last week where he found a show with the name  “Muhammad” which retails for R 359.95.

A number of people took to social media expressing disgust at the retailer for naming the shoe Muhammad with some even saying it borders on blasphemy.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Shoe City says they have a large product assortment and all shoes are given unique names for easy identification in-stores.

It says all the names are generated automatically from a database.

“Unfortunately, due to the automated nature of the process, Muhammad was one of the names which was generated. This was an oversight on our part, an oversight for which we take full responsibility.”

The retailer says it has taken immediate remedial action by recalling the Muhammed shoe from all its stores and removing the name from the database.

Shoe City also says it has taken all measures possible to prevent offensive shoe names being generated in the future.
