Sheikh Bassiouni Granted Permission by Egyptian Authorities to Attend Daughters Wedding

December 12, 2015

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2015-12-12

The Bassiouni family say permission granted by Egyptian authorities for Lenasia resident Sheikh Abdul Salaam Bassiouni to attend his daughter’s wedding in Egypt may be the beginning of a process of seeing him return to South Africa.

Bassiouni, a South African citizen of Egyptian origin was yesterday temporarily released from the notorious Torah Prion in Egypt where numerous high-profile prisoners have been detained to attend the wedding.

The Lenasia philanthropist was detained by Egypt’s National Security at Cairo Airport in early December last year after flying to Egypt.

Bassiouni is accused of being part of the banned Muslim Brotherhood.

His son Bilal says family and friend were elated and in tears at seeing Bassiouni after almost a year and it was also a complete surprise for the bride as very few people knew of his temporary release.

“Alhamdulillah we are happy my father could attend my sister’s wedding. Many people came to see him. Everyone including the helpers at the hall were in tears. It was truly emotional.”

He says while the feelings were bitter sweet because his father had to be taken back to Torah Prison after the ceremony, they will continue with their efforts to bring him back to South Africa safely.
