The son of a 65-year-old Lenasia man being detained in Egypt has confirmed that his father is expected to be released soon by that country’s authorities.
It’s understood that Sheikh Abdul Salaam Bassiouni was moved from the notorious Tora Prison where numerous high-profile prisoners have been detained to a local police station.
He was arrested by national security at Cairo airport in early December 2014 with his son Bilal after flying to Egypt for his daughter’s engagement.
Bilal was released but his father remained at Tora Prison.
The community leader from Lenasia is accused of being part of the Muslim brotherhood, a claim his family denies.
Bilal Bassiouni says after a long battle, his father could be home soon.
“There has been a court ruling yesterday that my father should be released. We are a bit sceptical and not sure about the outcomes. So as soon as my father is actually with the family in Egypt, we will let everyone know.”
Bilal has urged the community to continue to remember Sheikh Bassiouni in their prayers until his safe return back to South Africa.
