Sheikh Bassiouni Arrives Back in SA

February 12, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 12-02-2017

A 65-year-old South African man who was unlawfully detained in Egypt has arrived back in South Africa.

Shiekh Abdul Salaam Bassiouni was arrested by Egypt’s national security at Cairo airport in early December 2014 with his son Bilal after flying to Egypt for his daughter’s engagement.

Bilal was released but his father remained at Tora Prison where numerous high-profile prisoners have been detained.

Bassiouni was freed last year but had to remain in Egypt as part of the conditions of his release.

His son Bilal says they are ecstatic their father is back home.

“Sheikh Bassiouni has just arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa and he is now with his family. As from day one there was no charges, nothing against my father. This whole thing has been arbitrary and it has come to an end finally.”

Bassiouni was accused of being part of the Muslim brotherhood, a claim his family denies.
