The decomposed remains of seven people have been discovered in a fertilizer container in Paraguay. Officials say they are believed to have been undocumented migrants. All of the victims are believed to be male adults.
The BBC reports that the container had set off from Serbia on July 21, and had travelled through Croatia, Egypt, Spain and Argentina, en route to Paraguay. The bodies were discovered by employees of an agriculture company in Paraguay’s capital, Asuncion. A Serbian taxi receipt and telephone card were also discovered in the container.
Forensic expert Dr. Pablo Lemir said three of the seven deceased were from Morocco, while one was from Egypt, with asphyxiation the suspected cause of death.
Prosecutor Marcelo Saldivar said that it’s assumed the men had planned to travel to a nearer destination, as their supply of biscuits, bottled water and tinned food had been only enough to last 72 hours.
According to the BBC, all that was left of the migrants’ bodies was hair and bones.
