Yesterday at the Gallagher Estate in Midrand, the second presidential summit on gender-based violence and femicide got underway.

Civil society organisations highlighted that the country had become one of the most violent outside a war zone due to the steady rise in gender-violence cases.

In an interview with Radio Islam International, Vanita Daniels, Director of Rise Up Against Gender-Based Violence, said the president’s admission that the government has not done enough to address the pandemic of gender-based violence in South Africa is her main takeaway.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said in his address that South Africa was at war with its women and children and urged males to change their behaviour and end the epidemic of gender-based violence.

The summit was held for the first time since 2018.

Listen to the interview on Sabahul Muslim with guest Vanita Daniels, Director of Rise Up Against Gender-Based Violence, hosted by Junaid Kharsany.
