Schools for Grade 7’s & 12’s to Open on 1 June

May 19, 2020

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has announced schools will open on 1 June for Grade 7 and 12.

Motshekga was briefing the media on preparations for the re-opening of schools.

Schools in the country closed more than two months ago in a bid to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Motshekga says the National Command Council (NCC) and Cabinet have approved the reopening of schools on 1 June while teachers in all provinces will report to work on 25 May.

“Schools will reopen on 1 June. We will start with Grade 7 and Grade 12. We will look at small schools and different schools differently. We will give details during the course of the month.”

Motshekga says the Basic Education Department had relied on health experts and experience from other countries in informing its plans for the resumption of the academic year.

“There was always certainty that schools were going to open, but we must ensure learners and teachers are safe.”

Motshekga condemned the vandalism, burning, and robbing of 1,577 schools during the lockdown period appealing to the public to work with police in bringing perpetrators to book.
