School Pupils Face Expulsion if Found with Laser Pointers

May 04, 2015

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2015-05-04

The Gauteng Department of Education has warned school pupils to refrain from taking laser pointers to schools after at least two children suffered permanent eye damage.

Last month, an 11-year-old boy’s eye was left permanently damaged after looking into the light after one of his class mates was playing with it.

It’ reported the light penetrated the eye and permanently affected his retina.

The department’s spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane says learners found playing with laser pointers on school premises could face expulsion.

“The safety policy is determined by the school but we are warning against them being used at schools.”
