Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister says Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman had absolutely nothing to do with the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi after the public prosecutor said he would seek the death penalty for five suspects.

Public prosecutor Saud Al-Mojeb has confirmed in a statement on Thursday that twenty one people are now in custody with eleven indicted and referred to trial.

Asked about possible international sanctions in response to the cases, foreign minister Adel al-Jubeir told reporters in the capital Riyadh there’s a difference between sanctioning individuals and holding the Saudi government responsible.

Al-Jubeir says Khashoggi’s killing is now a legal case and should not be politicised.

“The politicisation of the issue contributes to a fissure in the Islamic world while the kingdom seeks the unity of the Islamic world.”

Saudi Arabia said the 59-year-old Khashoggi died in a fight inside its Istanbul consulate after he entered the building on 2 October to obtain a document certifying he divorced his ex-wife and wasn’t seen since.
