Saudi Authorities Cancel Ziyaarets to Jabal Nur in Makkah, Saudi Arabia

April 20, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 20-04-2018

Saudi Arabian authorities have cancelled all ziyaarets to Jabal Nur in Makkah, Saudi Arabia effective immediately.

The decision follows a statement by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawa and Guidance in Makkah which has raised concerns about activities on the mountain and the danger of ascending it.

Jabal Nur or ‘Mountain of the Light’ is a mountain in Makkah that houses the Cave of Hira where Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is said to have spent a great deal of time meditating, and where received his first revelation of the holy Qur’an, which consisted of the first five ayats of Surah Al-Alaq from the angel Jibrā’īl (AS).

Local Hajj and Umrah operator Fazila Malek says only Ziyarets to Jabal Nur is affected.

“With the reference received by the office of the Prince of Makkah regarding statement by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawa and Guidance in Makkah, with the problems they are having, they investigated and found out that people are indulging in bid’ah and shirk on Jabal Nur and there is a danger of injury or death to visitors by way of people falling off the mountain.”

The ministry has informed all travel agents not to include ziyaarets to Jabal Nur.

Saudi authorities say they will be monitoring the area, and any travel agent found to be violating the order would face severe penalties.
