Following a preliminary investigation, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has confirmed that journalist Jamal Khashoggi died after a fight at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.
In a statement on Saturday, the Saudi Foreign Ministry says investigations have revealed a group of suspects travelled from Saudi Arabia to Istanbul to meet with Khashoggi with the possibility of returning him to Saudi Arabia
It says discussions between the suspects and Khashoggi which took place inside the consulate did not go as planned and escalated negatively which led to a fight and the death of the Saudi journalist.
The foreign ministry says 18 Saudis have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Khashoggi entered Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to obtain a document certifying he divorced his ex-wife and hasn’t been seen since.
The Saudi Foreign Ministry says the Kingdom expresses its deep regret at the painful outcome and stresses the commitment of the authorities to bring the facts to the public
“The Kingdom took the necessary procedures to clarify the truth and began by dispatching an investigation team to Turkey on 6 October 2018 to investigate and cooperate with counterparts in Turkey.”
Arab News reports that Custodian of the two Holy Mosques King Salman has also ordered the creation of a ministerial committee headed by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to restructure the country’s General Intelligence Agency.
Earlier Saudi Arabia promised a thorough and transparent investigation into what happened to Khashoggi in Turkey.
