Samsung has awarded bursaries to students of the University of Pretoria, North West University, University of Johannesburg and the Gauteng Education Department to the value of R7 million.

President and CEO of Samsung Africa Sung Yoon, representatives of the educational institutions as well as the student beneficiaries, attended the ‘empowering tomorrow’ event on Tuesday.

The initiative is aligned with Samsung’s global mission ‘enabling people’, which is aimed at helping people discover and develop their innate potential.

The Gauteng Education Department’s Percy Moleke says the investment will help alleviate the current skills shortage facing the country.

“You have entrusted us with a lot of money and we promise we will not waste it. We will make use of it effectively and efficiently and most importantly make sure we spread the reach and the impact of that money.”

Samsung CEO Sung Yoon says the bursaries will not only fund these students’ education but the company will also pledged to seek out paths to employment for the deserving students.

“The future of South Africa is very bright because all the people in South Africa dedicate and focus on education for their children. So if Samsung can contribute a little bit for those who want to be educated and passionate to grow, that’s our pleasure.”

Yoon says Samsung will continue to pursue opportunities that give the youth of South Africa hope for the future with viable careers, allowing them to support themselves and make a positive impact on their families, their communities and where people are meaningfully engaged in the economy.
