SADTU Condemns Violence Against Teachers

March 12, 2018

Mohamed Ameen Dabhelia – 2018/03/12

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) told Radio Islam that they condemn any form of violence against teachers, after a viral video shows a learner throwing what appears to be a damaged book at her teacher.

The teacher then walks out of the class while appearing to make a phone call after being hit by the book.

SADTU’s Mugwena Maluleke says violence is not the solution to any problem, and commends the manner in which the teacher reacted.

Maluleke says they have called on the department of education to speed up investigations in order to determine what caused the provocation.

He adds that violence against teachers in the ‘South African school context’ is rife.

“It is very difficult to control it, in terms of the statistics; it is also under reported and happening almost on a daily basis.”

The Gauteng Education Department says they have offered counselling to the affected teacher through the employee wellness programme.
