SA Votes – Radio Islam: Educating, Empowering, Mobilising

April 02, 2014

umm Abdillah, Radio Islam Programming – 2014.04.02

The 2014 South African general election will be held on 7 May 2014 to elect a new National Assembly as well as new provincial legislatures in each province. It will be our 5th election since the end of the apartheid era in 1994.

Are you placing your mark where it matters?

Radio Islam’s programming material over the next month will endevour to take you through advice and considerations from various Ulama and role players in this regard. The aim is not to punt political party manifestos, rather for our loyal listeners and fans to join in the thread and fibre of our dear country — as Muslim South African’s — as we’ve done in the fight for political, social, economic and religious justice from the beginning.

Between 1652-1654 four "Asiatics" were sentenced by the High Court of Justice in Batavia (Jakarta – the de facto capital of the Dutch East Indies then) to banishment and hard labour for life. Their crime: preaching insurrection in Batavia.  Three of them were sent in the Haaselt (ship) to Mauritius and one was brought to the Cape of Good Hope.

This political prisoner was probably the first recorded Muslim to land on South African soil, two years after white settlement in the country.

No leeway for apathy!

“As a political, social and religious group, the South African Muslim community is taking on concrete shape in a process analogous to the emergence of the South African nation as a whole.

However, if the South African Muslim community can only be identified by the clothes they wear, or the food they eat, then they clearly have a long way to go towards making a coherent political contribution. At the same time, Muslim political activity in the country is important for its diversity and dynamism, ranging from key Muslim representation in government to pressure groups within civil society. In one way or another, these activities confirm the particular nature of being Muslim in the South African political space.

The strength of such political activity lies in the contribution that individuals and groups make to the well-being of all South Africans.” [Prof. Abdulkader Tayob]

We matter. Vote. Stand United. Make a difference.
