Stats SA says the unemployment rate has increased to 34.4% in the second quarter for 2021 from 32.6% in the first quarter.
Stats SA released the Quarterly Labour Force Survey for the second quarter on Tuesday.
This is the highest unemployment rate recorded since the survey started in 2008.
According to the data, the number of unemployed persons increased by 584,000 to 7.8 million compared to the first quarter of 2021.
The data also showed the number of discouraged work-seekers increased by 186,000 (5.9%) and the number of people who were not economically active for reasons other than discouragement decreased by 571,000 (4.5%) between the two quarters
The Eastern Cape recorded the highest official and expanded unemployment rates while Limpopo and the Northern Cape have more than 15,0 percentage points difference between their expanded and official unemployment rates.
Unemployment among youth aged 25 to 34 was recorded at 42.9% while among tertiary graduates is at 11%.
