SA Muslims Warned About Fatal Attraction of ISIS

April 23, 2015

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2015-04-23

There are growing concerns that many South African families intend joining the Islamic State in Syria (Isis).

A special awareness programme was held in Vereeniging last night where warnings were issued by Imams and theologians to South African Muslims to safeguard themselves from being misled by the militant group.

Earlier this month, a 15-year-old girl from Cape Town was stopped from boarding a Johannesburg-bound flight to connect to Saudi Arabia after reportedly being recruited by Isis.

Secretary General of the Council of Muslim Theologians, Ebrahim Bham, said people need to know what Isis is all about.

Bham says people are lured to Iraq and Syria under false pretences.

“We firmly believe that this particular groups methodology and way, we believe is harmful and is a distortion of Islam.”

He says parents, the community and the nation should be concerned and protect the youth who are most vulnerable.

“One important point is our youth are very, very valuable. There is disconnect between us and our youth. We are not speaking the same language; we do not understand one another.”

Bham reiterated the situation remains a challenge but a firm commitment must be made so that the youth can be guided from the fatal attraction of Isis. – EWN
