SA Muslims Urged to Seek Moon for Dawn of Muharram & New Islamic Year 1443

August 09, 2021

Faizel Patel – 09/08/2021

With just over a few hours left for before the end of the Islamic year 1442, the Muslim community has been urged to seek for the new moon on Monday evening in South Africa.

The sighting of the hilaal Insha’Allah will signal the dawn of Muharram, the first month of the new Islamic calendar and Hijri year 1443.

The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa which monitors and co-ordinates the moonsighting on behalf of the United Ulama Council of South Africa have given an indication of the viewing times for the moon sighting.

In Johannesburg, the viewing time will be about fifty-five minutes just after sunset at 6:41pm, in Durban for fifty-six minutes just after sunset at 6:23pm and in Cape Town for fifty-six minutes just after sunset at 7:08pm.

In the event of the moon being sighted anywhere else in the country, the Muslim community have been advised to contact the UUCSA’s Central Hilaal Committee.

If the moon is not sighted on Monday evening, the 1st of Muharram 1443 will be on Wednesday 11 August Insha’Allah.
