Radio Islam International – 2019/01/21
South African politician and businessman, Roelof Petrus “Roelf” Meyer told Radio Islam that the country has come a long way since the Apartheid era ended.
Originally a member of the National Party, Meyer, along with President Cyril Ramaphosa, played a crucial role during the negotiations to bring about a peaceful end to apartheid.
With electioneering in full swing, South Africans seem confused as to how they should vote as the country moves toward the 2019 elections.
According to the recent Bloomberg’s Misery Index, South Africa is the second-most miserable country on earth.
The escalating crime rate, the depths of government’s involvement in State Capture, the ever-rising unemployment and inequality levels in the world have all contributed to the unhappiness that South Africans are feeling.
Meyer says although there is no official yard stick to measure the level of success during the transformation period, the country has certainly achieved a lot.
“Progress was made in many areas, if you think about it, in terms of housing, in terms of water supply, in terms of electricity supple etc.”
But Meyer admits there has been a fair share of problems as well.
