The Health Department has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 516,862.
This is an increase of 5,377 from Sunday’s announcement.
The number of deaths has also increased by 173 bringing the total to 8,539.
Gauteng has the most infections with 181,946 followed by Western Cape at 97,076, Eastern Cape at 79,674, KwaZulu-Natal 84,361, Free State 23,705, North West 20,149, Mpumalanga 15,395, Limpopo 9,204, Northern Cape 5,302 and unallocated infections 50.
The total number of recoveries to date is 358,037 which translates to a recovery rate of 69%.
Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 3,058,695 this is an increase of 21,916 which were done in the last 24 hours.
“Regrettably, we report a further 173 COVID-19 related deaths: 20 from Eastern Cape, 37 from Gauteng, 12 from KwaZulu Natal, 31 from Western Cape, 28 from North West and 45 from Mpumalanga. This brings the cumulative number of COVID-19 related deaths to 8,539.”
Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families of those who have succumbed to the pandemic.
