SA COVID-19 Deaths Rise to 12,423 – Infections Jump to 596,060

The Health Department has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 596,060.

This is an increase of 3,916 from Tuesday’s announcement.

The number of deaths has also increased by 159 bringing the total to 12,423.

Gauteng has the most infections with 202,011 followed by Western Cape at 103,210, Eastern Cape at 84,362, KwaZulu-Natal 107,271, Free State 33,163, North West 23,641, Mpumalanga 22,067, Limpopo 11,944, Northern Cape 8,341 and unallocated infections 50.

The total number of recoveries to date is 491,441 which translates to a recovery rate of 82%.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 3,455,671 this is an increase of 25,324 which were done in the last 24 hours.

“Regrettably we report 159 new COVID-19 related deaths: 37 from Eastern Cape, 43 from Gauteng, 45 from KwaZulu Natal, 5 from Free State, and 29 from Western Cape. This brings the cumulative total of reported COVID-19 related deaths to 12,423.

Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families of those who have succumbed to the pandemic.
