SA COVID-19 Deaths Now at 52, Infections Rise to 3,034

Health Minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize has announced that 2 more people have died from COVID-19 in South Africa bring the total deaths to 52 while the infections have jumped to 3,034

This is an increase of 251 from Friday’s announcement.

Gauteng has the most infections with 1,101, followed by the Western Cape at 836, KwaZulu-Natal 604, Free State 100, North West 24, Mpumalanga 25, Limpopo 26, Eastern Cape 270, Northern Cape 16 and unallocated infections 32.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 108,021, this is an increase of 7,194 from the last report.

“Today we regrettably report 2 new COVID-19 related deaths.This increases the total number of deaths to 52.”

Mkhize has conveyed government’s condolences to the families and acknowledged appreciation to the health workers who were treating the deceased patients.

Mkhize says on average between 3.7% – 5% of those who have been screened and tested through community screening initiatives, test positive for the Coronavirus.

“It differs from province to province. It’s just an estimation I can give.”

Mkhize says that they are not anywhere near where they want to be in terms of testing, and this means that the numbers will be increasing as they ramp up testing.

Worldwide, the number of confirmed cases has surpassed the 2 million 2,313,897 with 159,033 and 591,297.
