The health department has announced that over 1,045,104 South Africans have now received the COVID-19 vaccine.

Under the Sisonke vaccine rollout programme phase one, a total of 479,768 healthcare workers received the jab, while 565,336 people over 60 have also been vaccinated.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has thanked all those involved in the vaccination campaign.

“We will continue to ramp up our daily vaccinations, working together with the private sector, towards attaining the targets we have committed to as government.”

At the same time, ninety-five more people have died in South Africa after contracting the coronavirus.

These fatalities – recorded over the past 24-hour reporting cycle – bring the country’s known death toll since the start of the pandemic to 56,601

The Health Department says another 3,614 infections were also detected over that period, with the caseload ballooning to 1 669,231

The recovery rate is steady at 93.7%, with 1 563,719 people having recuperated so far.
