The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) says motorists who benefitted from an elaborate scheme allegedly run by Ekurhuleni metro police department clerks which saw car owners who died years ago racking up thousands of Rands of unpaid licence disk debts must be charged and pay for the outstanding licence fees.
It’s understood that the employees targeted mostly deceased people or motorists who had not renewed their licences in a long time.
Last week police arrested the three senior clerks and cashier Sefuka at the Benoni centre.
The four were released on Thursday on R5000 bail each after appearing at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on charges of fraud and corruption.
The RTMC’s Simon Zwane says the scam was uncovered through detective work and analysis conducted by law enforcement officers responsible for compliance and anti-corruption.
“We must now follow up on the people who benefitted of this schemes, so that motorists themselves. (sic) We are adamant that they must also be charged and they must pay for all of those outstanding licence fees and the penalties that were owing before they transferred the vehicles in this kind of manner.
