Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 02-03-2017

The Gauteng Health Department has confirmed there has been a structural collapse of the roof at the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg.

The department says the collapse took place in the passage near the maternity department o Hospital Street.

“At this stage we cannot what caused the collapse.”

Its understood construction workers were sealing the roof when it collapsed this afternoon.

The DA’s Jack Bloom says Staff at the hospital told him that stones were moved onto the section of the roof which collapsed onto the hospital street level.

Bloom says that the hospital’s entire structure needed to be immediately assessed and attended to.

“Staff at the Hospital have warned in the past of the leaking Hospital roofs and other structural problems in the building.”

Gauteng Health MEC Gwen Ramokgopa says about 5 people including two construction workers, two patients and a hospital employee sustained minor injuries during the collapse.

Ramokgopa says rescue services will be working around the clock to assist people that might trapped under the rubble.

In 2015 it emerged that a 2012 report warned that the X-ray department must be evacuated as it could potentially collapse.

The report revealed there were structural defects on the fifth floor of the building and recommended R50 million worth of urgent repairs.
