Every year, the festive season sees an increase in fatal car crashes as South African roads get busier this time of year. This year has been no different, with reports of more than 80 deaths in the Gauteng province so far.

A spokesperson for the Gauteng Traffic Police, Obed Sibasa says the current statistics are disappointing as he describes the number of road deaths as ‘unacceptable’.

He added that drunk drivers are a particular concern on the roads.

“Disturbing! Gauteng Traffic Police arrested six drunk drivers in less than 30 minutes yesterday and in the West Rand, 35 drivers were arrested for the same,” says Sibasa.

The police are advising motorists to drive with their headlights on during this period to improve visibility; buckle up at all times; avoid unsafe overtaking; and keep within the speed limit.
