Hundreds of people are expected to mobilise at the Western Cape High court today for a placard demonstration in support of a masjid to be built in Knysna.
The masjid project has received continuous opposition by the non-Muslim community since it was initiated more than a year who say the municipality’s decision contravenes its own regulation and bylaws.
While the Knysna Municipality has pledged its full support behind the building of the masjid by the Knysna Muslim Council (KMC) a group of local home owners and concerned citizens have objected to the project.
The KMC’s Omar Essa says they are hoping that court makes the right decision in the matter.
“We are hoping that the hearing proceedings will be finalised today, if not, at least tomorrow and we expect also the judgement to made soon.”
Essa says their temporary premises where salaah is currently being read is constrained.
“For the last 6/7 years our current place of worship has run out of capacity. We do not have sufficient space to accommodate musallees, especially our visitors and our tourists. So we had to rely for the past few years now on public space covered by shaded cloth or containers and various other methods to accommodate our musallees. It’s very inconvenient.”
Essa has urged the Muslim community to make dua for a success in the court application Insha’Allah.
