Lenasia residents have been urged to report any suspicious activity after a number of water meters have been stolen in the suburb.
According to YAB’s advisory WhatsApp group, at least ten reports have been received of water meter being stolen in one day alone.
It’s believed suspected thieves are after copper components housed within the meters.
Some meters are also being sold as scrap as they are made of brass.
Apart from having the meters replaced, there is a huge amount of water wastage including water outages which affect residents when the meters are stolen.
Local ward councillor Kishore Badal says the theft of the water meters usually happens in the early hours of the morning.
“It’s very difficult to manage it, but all we can do is ask residents if they see anything suspicious they call me, they call the police or they call Joburg Water.”
Badal says the City of Joburg is also trying to assist by involving depot managers, general managers and the MMC for Environment & Infrastructure to deal with the crisis.
