Kashmiri analyst Inshah Malik says a number of human rights organisations who have conducted research since the early 1990’s – when the arm struggle started; found that villages which were infiltrated by the Indian army saw an increase of sexual violations being committed.
However, lawmakers have handed down no justice or judgements.
Malik says the delay in the rape and murder case of eight-year-old Asifa is no surprise.
“The case is still being followed, but what we don’t hear a lot is about how her lawyers have been intimidated and how there is a huge pressure from the Hindu right wing powers to completely support the idea of justice here.”
Malik adds that there is a huge religious polarisation happening within Jammu and Kashmir.
“The army is being sent in to colleges, students are being beaten up, including like being taken as human shields, but I think the new generation of Kashmiri’s is unwilling to let these protests die down.”
Students have been in uproar ever since the brutal rape and murder of Asifa, however the military have been trying to mute the demonstrations.
