The family of a Polokwane businessman accused of murdering his wife believe he is innocent.
Rameez Patel was granted R250,000 bail in the Polokwane Magistrates Court today.
He is accused of killing his wife Fatima in April.
In handing down judgment, magistrate Mohammad Sheik said the police statement was incomplete and there were many questions around witness accounts.
In a statement released to the media, Rameez Patel’s family say they are happy he’s out on bail but still grieve Fatima’s absence.
Patel’s father Firoz says one notable factor in the saga was the prevalence of democracy in South Africa that gave everyone opportunities to express their support for his son.
“We really appreciate the support I got from everybody.”
He says both Rameez and Fatima remain their children, close to their heart and firmly believe Rameez is innocent.
Patel will have to report three times a day at the Westenburg Police Station as part of his bail conditions including surrendering his children’s passports and not interfering with state witnesses.
Patel will be back in court on the 7th of next month.
