On Wednesday, the chair of the panel – former Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo handed the report to the parliament speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula.

In the report, the panel found that there is evidence that suggests President Cyril Ramaphosa may have violated the constitution and anti-corruption laws in his handling of a 2020 burglary at his Phala Phala farm in Limpopo.

Ramaphosa spokesperson adds that the president wants to give the country “a clear sense of direction” on the way forward after the release of the Phala Phala report.

Magwenya further called this “an extraordinary time for our constitutional democracy”.

Meanwhile, the African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) will be holding a special meeting on Thursday evening to discuss the Phala Phala report.

However, ANC Spokesperson Pule Mabe has quashed claims that the step-aside rule will apply to Ramaphosa at this point.

He points out that the rule only applies to those who are criminally charged.

This comes as the ANC is to host its elective conference between 16-20 December 2022.
