President Cyril Ramaphosa has conceded that the African National Congress (ANC) has corrupt officials within its ranks.
Ramaphosa appeared at the Zondo State Capture Inquiry for the first time in his capacity as ANC president.
Ramaphosa says his appearance at the state capture commission on Wednesday is not to make excuses or defend the indefensible.
He says the ANC has taken measures to deal with with corruption.
“State capture took place under our watch, the governing party. It involves some members and leaders of our organisation. The vast majority of ANC leaders, ANC cadres and ANC members are vehemently opposed to corruption, but we all acknowledge that the organisation could and should have done more to prevent the abuse of power.”
Ramaphosa says the ANC resolved at its last conference to support the establishment of the state capture commission and has consistently expressed its support for it.
“The ANC’s position has been that it is the responsibility of ANC members and indeed all South Africans to assist the commission in its work. Therefore I appear before the commission not to make excuses for to defend the indefensible. The ANC has agreed to not only support the work of the commission but to assist the commission in every way possible fulfill its mandate.”
Meanwhile Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen says Ramaphosa cannot distance himself from state capture because he was part of the ANC’S top six during what he calls the nine wasted years.
