Ramaphosa Announces Resumption of Economic Activity but Religious Gatherings Still Not Allowed

April 23, 2020

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced announces a gradual and phased resumption of economic activity from 30 April.

Ramaphosa was addressing the nation on Thursday on measures the country continues to undertake to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Ramaphosa says there is clear evidence that the lockdown is working, but an abrupt and uncontrolled lifting of restrictions will cause a resurgence in infections.

The President says South Africa will move from level 5 lockdown, which it is currently under, to level 4 from 1 May.

“If the virus spreads too quickly, there  are not enough hospital beds and ventilators for everyone who needs it.”

Ramphosa also says all gatherings, except funerals and work, are not allowed.

“Religious, cultural and social gatherings will not be allowed until it is deemed safe for them to resume.”

Ramaphosa says South Africans can prevent the spread of the coronavirus by doing a few simple things, such as washing hands, using hand sanitizers and practicing social distancing.
