The Presidency has confirmed that President Cyril Ramaphosa has accepted a letter of resignation from Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba.

Gigaba made headlines in recent week for lying under oath in the Fireblade matter, his links to state capture while he was Public Enterprises Minister and a recent selfie video of the minister engaging in a private solo sex act.

There have been growing calls for Gigaba to step down or for Ramaphosa to fire him.

In a statement, the Presidency says Ramaphosa has expressed his appreciation for Gigaba for his service to the government and people of South Africa.

In his letter Gigaba indicated that he was stepping aside for the sake of the country and the African National Congress (ANC).

Gaigaba has also said that his resignation is in no way admission of guilt and leaves the public services with a clear conscience.

Ramaphosa has requested Minister of Transport Blade Nzimande to act as Minister of Home Affairs until a permanent appointment is made.
