As Muslim enter the second week of the blessed month of Ramadan, hospitals in Dubai have reported a larger than usual intake of patients over the opening 10 days of Ramadan due to overeating.
Doctors are reportedly seeing an excessive amount of patients in the emergency outpatient section of facilities due to problems relating to gastroenteritis, an infection of the gut.
Dr Ola Nagi Ibrahim, a General Practitioner in Bareen Hospital in the United Aram Emirates capital, told the Khaleej Times newspaper that this was due to people overindulging in food during iftar and suhoor.
“We are receiving too many patients with abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea in Ramadan, it is really too much now. Sometimes we receive an entire family all at once.”
Health officials have now gone on a drive to advise patients not to be too excited at the time of beginning the fast and ending it, advising that water, dates, and a salad should preferably be consumed.
