June 06, 2016

Faizel Patel, 2016-06-05

Muslims across South Africa are preparing for the holy month of Ramadan which begins this week.

More than a billion Muslims around the world will abstain from eating, drinking, smoking, from dawn to dusk for a whole month.

While the moon was not sighted in South Africa yesterday which signals the beginning of the month of Ramadan in the Islamic calendar, the United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) has confirmed the holy month will officially begin from Tomorrow.

Spokesperson Moulana Ebrahim Bham said: “After consultation with all the theological bodies, the United Ulama Council of South Africa can announce that there was no sighting in South Africa and as such Ramadan will commence from Tuesday the 7th of June.”

“We make due that Allah (SWT) make this a very blessed Ramadan for one an all and we make dua that the objectives of fasting and Ramadan find fulfilment in each and every believers life and part of that objective is Allah has made fasting compulsory upon you that you gain the fear of Almighty Allah (SWT).

At the same time, the former premier of Mpumalanga and member of the national executive committee of the ANC Mathews Phosa also wished Muslims well over the month of Ramadan.

“I wish to take this opportunity to sincerely wish all Muslims in South Africa and around the world a very blessed Ramadan. May this month bring forgiveness and peace for all humanity.”

Phosa also thanked the Muslim community in South Africa for their generosity to the less fortunate.
