“Ramadan in Canada, an Unforgettable Experience” – Ml Sulaiman Moola

June 13, 2016

Renowned Islamic scholar Moulana Sulaiman Moola says the atmosphere during Ramadan in North America is an experience that is unparalleled and unforgettable.

Ml Moola is currently on a lecture tour at the Markham Masjid in Canada which is one of the countries in the world where the hours of fasting are longer than usual.

Canadians fast up to 18 hours a day during the month of Ramadan and because of the length of the fast they try to sleep late in the afternoon and immediately after Fajr.

Moulana Moola says Ramadan in Canada  is unique and a number of Ulama visit the country staying between 5 and 10 days to render programmes at various masaajid.

“The atmosphere is so electrifying where ever you are and that’s where you got to admire people who observe the lengthy fast. If you speak to the people they say and I think that’s all something we all can identify with that with the hunger you somewhat adapt. But I think sleep is the factor that you have to slot in throughout the day.”

He says that Ifthar programmes and feeding schemes also feature prominently in the North American country.

“There is a drive to feed people throughout the Ramadan. So in other words the entire Musallee and the community would not be eating at home for the entire Ramadan and people donate which is a collective and community spirt.”

Moulana Moola highlighted that the beginning of Esha and taraweeh salaah begins at 10:45pm and finishes well after midnight.

“Masha’Allah you literally admire the elderly folks that stand in salaah and even others because people are working and they continue to observe and preserve the practice of reciting Quran despite the length of day and the shortness of the night and all the other related logistical challenges.”

Moulana Moola says there is always a large turnout by the youth who sit for the entire programme always asking questions about common challenges that young adults face today.

He says many Muslims visit different countries across the globe, not a holiday per se but rather to experience how Ramadan in observed by others.

“That is so amazing and impressive because we go through our slight challenges but we don’t appreciate the challenges of others.”

Ml Moola is expected to return back to Johannesburg later this week before leaving for Ireland and the United Kingdom.
