With the 2016 municipal elections just a couple of weeks away in what has been described as the country’s most fiercely contested polls since the dawn of democracy, six political parties will be battling it out in a debate hosted by Radio Islam International in conjunction with ITV.
People from Lenasia and surrounding areas are urged to attend the debate which is expected to take place at the Nur ul Islam Hall in Lenasia on the 23rd of July at 7:30pm.
It will feature the ANC’s Zarina Motala, Al Jamah’s Abdul Razak Noorbhai, the DA’s Ghaleb Cachalia, the EFF’s Nazier Paulsen, Cope’s Dumisani Ndlovi and independent candidate Muhammed Azhar Bulbulia.
Radio Islam’s Programmes Manager and host of the debate Moulana Sulaiman Ravat says all South Africans should vote and be passionate about taking South Africa forward.
“This is an ideal opportunity to interact with politicians and raise your concerns.”
A record 200 parties and 61 014 candidates will contest the 3 August 2016 polls.
This is approximately 65% more parties and approximately 12% more candidates than the previous municipal elections held in 2011.
While 26.3 million people have registered to vote, making it the highest number in an election, South Africans will have the opportunity to elect leaders who will serve for a period of five years at municipal government level, mainly councillors and mayors.
Political heavyweights will be slogging it out for control of the big metros, the newcomers are vowing to make a dramatic debut and the independents promising a breath of fresh air as service delivery issues grip the country.
While what is decided at the polls will have a direct bearing on essential services, South Africans want assurances the party they vote for will make a difference to their quality of living
Similar debates will be hosted in conjunction with Radio Al Ansaar in Durban and Voice of the Cape in the mother city.
