The Muslim community in South Africa have opened their hearts and pledged more than R 1.5 million in support and aid for Malawi that has been left devastated by heavy rainfall and floods over the past two weeks.
Namanolo Islamic Educational Trust in conjunction with the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa on Thursday dispatched to Malawi a consignment of 120 metric tons comprising of 5 containers loaded with maize meal, cooking oil, sugar and other food stuff.
The container was due to arrive in Malawi on Tuesday, but due to unforeseen delays will only arrive on Friday or Saturday.
“The Muslim community in South Africa were saddened by the developments in Malawi and decided to assist their brethren as the Qur’an teaches them,” Ahmed Vaid, trustee of Namanolo Islamic Education Trust and executive member of Jamiatul Ulama South African said.
Last week Malawian President Peter Mutharika declared a third of the country a disaster Zone and urgently appealed for foreign aid.
The floods have left about 176 people dead and almost 200,000 displaced.
