Public Protector Back in Court To Interdict Her Suspension By Ramaphosa

May 22, 2022

By Umamah Bakharia

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane is back in court to interdict President Cyril Ramaphosa from suspending her. Mkhwebane is also challenging the Constitutional Court’s decision to reject her impeachment rescission bid.

The Western Cape High Court heard yesterday that the most powerful forces in the country were working in what her lawyer Advocate Dali Mphofu called, a coordinated fashion in a bid to remove her from office.

He named Ramaphosa, Speaker of the National Assembly Nsiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and Chief Justice Raymond Zondo as among those conspiring against her.

In an interview with Radio Islam International, Organization Undoing Tax Abuse’s (OUTA) Wayne Duvenhage says the public protector is a victim of her own wrong doing.

“She is not doing [her job] not once but time after time with failed court challenges that she’s bought, with court orders, everything like that and possibly with perjury charges then you see the might of people in power that should be and have to be taken against her,” says Duvenhage.

Her lawyer, Mphofu had previously argued that Mkhwebane is being prosecuted based on an image portrait by NGO’s and the media.

OUTA’s Duvenhage argues that the media and NGO’s have exposed wrongdoings and are taking action against the individual.

“This is just politics, this is just grand standing and [Mphofu and Mkhwebane are] trying to deflect the real issue,” says Duvenhage.

He adds that Raymond Zondo was included in the report because of the state capture that includes misspending of municipalities etc.
