Pro-Palestine supporters say they will not accept the US decision to move its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Several organizations including the South African Communist Party (SACP), Palestine Solidarity Campaign, National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) and a number of protestors picketed outside the US Consulate in Sandton on Tuesday to commemorate 70 years since the Nakba or “catastrophe”.
The commemorations highlight the campaign that led to the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their villages.
With shouts of “Free Free Palestine”, pro-Palestine supporters are angry and sad after about 60 Palestinians, including children, have been killed while protesting on the border with Israel.
Addressing the crowd, Attorney Ziyaad Patel says all those that gathered at the embassy are part of the international intifada (uprising) that is unfolding in solidarity with the Palestinians.
“We look in disgust as to what is transpiring in Gaza, where Gazan’s and Palestinians, innocent civilians are being slaughtered by the Israeli IDF.”
Reading out the memorandum of demands, Patel says they vehemently object to the US decision to relocate the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
“May it then regurgitate and may it reverberate to the four corners of the world that we here today refuse to stand down. We refuse to accept United States imperial hegemony.”
After a lengthy screening by a representative of the US Consulate, Patel was allowed in handed over the memorandum to officials.
