Lately, residents of Lenasia have been experiencing extended periods of power cuts after the load-shedding period due to vandalism at powerhouses, cable theft and, mainly, power overload.
Some residents had no electricity for four days and were still scheduled for loadshedding when the power had been restored. At times loadshedding would end, and the lights would be on for a few seconds, followed by an outage, which only restores the next day or after a few days.
These scenarios call for residents to be extra vigilant as there has been an increase in local crimes, such as hijackings in the Lenasia area.
Criminals know the loadshedding times and utilise this to their benefit, affecting the aged and ill residing in the area. An elder from the Lenasia area who spoke out said, “Some of us have sick people at home who need to be on oxygen or a nebuliser.”
The situation is unacceptable, and residents are furious.
Many businesses in the Lenasia area are also significantly impacted and have to rely upon generators, exhausting the business’s capital yet remaining the only option.
The situation impacts not only a single area in Lenasia but many, including extensions 1, 2, 9, 10 and 13 – all of which have been experiencing these uncalled-for and extended outages amidst the cold season.
